Luke Part 3

  • What does Luke 10:25 say?
    • "Teacher what should I do to inherit eternal life?"
  • How does Jesus answer?
    • Love God with all your heart and your neighbor as yourself 
  • Conventional Jewish wisdom says neighbors include who?
    • It includes other Jews only.
  • Sum up Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan.
    • A dude gets beat up. A priest and Levite pass him up without helping him. A Samaritan helps him out.
  • Who ended up treating the man’s wounds?
    • A Samaritan
  • Why do Jews despise Samaritans?
    • They considered them racial and spiritual half-breeds.
  • Who was a neighbor to the man?
    • The Samaritan
  • What does Luke 10:36-37 say?
    • "Yes, now go and do the same," Jesus replies.

 

Luke Part 2

  • What is a “bar-mitzvah”?
    • A coming-of-age ritual
  • Why did Jesus and his family go to Jerusalem?
    • For the Passover festival 
  • Where did Mary and Joseph find Jesus? What was he doing?
    •  They found him in the temple teaching the priests or Pharisees.
  • How did Jesus answer?
    • He said,"Didn't you know that I must be in my Father's house."
  • Jesus already “seems to understand” what?
    • That he has a unique relationship with His Heavenly Father and mission to fulfill.

Luke Part 1

  • Who is Theophilus or who might he have been?
    • Luke wrote this book to him. He might have been a patron to help finance Luke's book or a Roman friend interested in the new religion.
  • How much of the NT was written b/c of him?
    • A third of the New Testament

Mark

Part 1
a. Why is Mark considered a book for “readers with short attention spans”?
It is the shortest Gospel. Light on talk and heavy on action
b. What does Mark open up with (rather than a family tree or the birth of Jesus)?

He opens up with John the baptist baptising people.
c. What does Mark 1:7-8 say?

And this was his message: "After me will come one more powerful than I, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
d. “Then Jesus took off to work”…doing what?

He rounding up disciples, healing houndreds, feeding thousands, calming storms, and walking on water.
Part 2
a. Why do people recognize Jesus as a rabbi?
He sounded like one.
b. What happened at the Sea of Galilee?
Jesus told Peter and Andrew to follow Him.
c. What did Jesus offer to make these fishermen?

He offered to make them fishers of men.
d. What did Andrew hear John the Baptist call Jesus?

Andrew heard John called Jesus the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
e. What did tax collectors do in Jesus’ time?
They overcharged people and grew rich from this.
f. Tell me about the “company” Jesus “keeps”.

Jesus hung out with sinners, tax collectors, and other bad people.

It starts small with Him and the disciples and grows to be a Christian movement around the world.

Part 2
a. Why were genealogies so important to Jews?
They could confirm their inherited rights and responsibilies.
b. Did Jesus meet the "ancestral requirements" for being the Messiah? How?
Yes, he descended from King David.
c. Why is his family tree a bit odd?
It only matches Luke's geneology in a few names. It also includes women.
d. How does Matthew target Jewish readers more than any other Gospel? (hint: see "The Jewish Gospel")
He used common Jewish phrases. He traced Jesus' family tree to Abraham (Father of the Jews). He pointed out 57 prophesies that Jesus fulfilled.

Part 3
a. What does "Eastern lands" refer to?
He means what is now Iraq or Iran.
b. What did the wise men bring?
They brought myrrh, gold, frankincense.
c. Who predicted that the Messiah would come from Bethlehem?
Micah did.
d. What was Herod's "vicious" order?
He ordered Bethlehem boys 2 and younger to be killed.
e. When do scholars think Jesus was born? (What year)
He was born in either 6 or 7 BC.

a. Was Matthew the first gospel written?
It probably was not.
b. What does "Gospel" mean?
It means Good News.
c. What promise does Malachi close the OT with?
God will send a Messiah to fix Israel's problems and bring peace and joy to the people.
d. What does Matthew declare as he opens up the NT?
The Messiah has come.
e. What does Matthew convince readers of?
The Messiah has come at last.
f. Who wrote Matthew? When was it written?
Matthew is believed to have written it. It was written around AD 70.
